Todd McGuinness enters his eighth season as head men’s basketball coach at Hartwick in 2016-17. In his seven seasons at the helm, McGuinness is the third-winningest coach in program history and has led the Hawks to four NCAA Tournament appearances and three Empire 8 Tournament Championships.
This past season, McGuinness led the Hawks to their third Empire 8 title after defeating number two seed Nazareth in the semifinals and number one seed St. John Fisher in the championship. As a result, 'Wick would seal a spot in the national tournament for the fourth time in six years. McGuinness would also reach the 100-win mark for his career in a win over Gwynedd-Mercy on December 19.
McGuinness guided 'Wick to a 15-11 record and the program's fourth postseason appearance in five seasons in 2014-15.
In 2013-14, McGuinness led his team to to an overall record of 18-10, a 10-4 mark in th league, and a tie for the Empire 8 regular season title. The Hawks would claim the conference tournament crown and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Jared Suderley was named a D3hoops.com and an NABC All-American in 2013-14. He was also an NABC All-East, D3hoops.com All-East, and ECAC Upstate First Team All-Star. Hartwick's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Suderley was tabbed the Empire 8 Player of the Year for the second time in his career. In addition, Joey Lufkin was selected as the D3hoops.com, ECAC Upstate, and Empire 8 Rookie of the Year.
In 2011-2012, McGuinness led the Hawks to a school record-tying 23 wins, a record 12 conference wins, and the Empire 8 regular season title. For his efforts, he was named the 2012 Empire 8 Coach of the Year.
McGuinness also piloted ‘Wick to the Empire 8 Tournament Championship and the NCAA Tournament in his second season in 2010-2011.
In 2012, Suderley was named a D3Hoops.com All-American and an NABC Coaches' Division All-American. He was named to the NABC East Region All-District First Team, D3hoops.com All-East Region Team and was an ECAC Upstate 1st team selection. Suderley also became just the second player in Hartwick history to go over 1,000 points in just two seasons.
In his first campaign with the Hawks, McGuinness guided the Blue and White to a 10-14 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the Empire 8. The seven E8 victories is 'Wick's highest win total in conference play since the 2000-01 season. The Hawks' sixth place finish in the standings was their highest since the '00-'01 squad placed fourth in the league.
As a freshman, Suderley garnered ECAC Upstate Rookie of the Year, D3hoops.com All-East Region Rookie of the Year and Empire 8 Rookie of the Year along with being named the Empire 8 Tournament MVP.
A former assistant men's basketball coach for Hartwick from 2002-2004, McGuinness spent three seasons as the assistant men's basketball coach at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Prior to his three-year stint at Case Western, McGuinness spent two seasons (2004-2006) as the assistant coach at Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, NY.
McGuinness, who emerged from a pool of more than 150 applicants, became the 19th head coach in the 80-year history of the men's basketball program at Hartwick. In the 2002-03 season McGuinness served under the tutelage of Tim McGraw '88, and in 2003-04 for first-year head coach Paul Culpo.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA, McGuinness played four seasons of collegiate basketball at Bethany College (WV) where he received his bachelor's degree in physical education (K-12) in 2002. He was a three-year starter and a co-captain his junior and senior seasons. McGuinness helped lead the Bison to two President's Athletic Conference (PAC) championships (2001 and 2002), consecutive postseason appearances in the ECAC Tournament, and the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2002.
Prior to Bethany, McGuinness was a three-year player at Gateway High School, where he was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Section first-team selection in 1998.
