CLEVELAND, OH – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) has announced the addition of West Virginia as an
affiliate member in men's soccer beginning in the 2012-13 academic year.
The addition of the Mountaineers will increase the MAC men's soccer membership to eight members—five from MAC
full-time membership (Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan) and three affiliate members
(Florida Atlantic University, Hartwick College, West Virginia).
The 2012 season will be the 51st season of competition for men's soccer for West Virginia. The Mountaineers have a
410-339-81 all-time record (1961-2011) and have 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
West Virginia is led by head coach Marlon LeBlanc, as the Mountaineers finished the 2011 season with an 11-8-1 record
and an RPI of 24 and strength of schedule of 19th in the nation. Last season, West Virginia defeated Xavier, 2-1, in the
NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament First Round, before falling at Maryland, 4-0, in the Second Round.
'Wick and West Virginia have met just twice in the 56-year history of the Hartwick men's soccer program, with both
matches taking place in the Oneonta Mayor's Cup. The Hawks and Mountaineers first met in 1997 with Hartwick coming
away with a 3-2 overtime win. The programs squared off again in 2001. Hartwick came away with a 2-1 victory
in the rematch.
Founded in 1946, the Mid-American Conference is an NCAA Division I, 12-member conference that sponsors 23
championships and is one of 11 members of the Football Bowl Subdivison (FBS). With total enrollment of nearly
300,000 students, the league represents institutions of higher learning in six (6) states - Illinois, Indiana,
Michigan, New York, and Ohio.
