Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) and men's basketball sophomore forward
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY) headlined the Hartwick College Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony Wednesday evening held in the Binder Physical Education Center's Lambros Arena. Ha received the
Anna Meyer Female Athlete of the Year Award, while Suderley was crowned as the winner of the Roy Chipman Memorial Award for Male Athlete of the Year.
Ha racked up a team-high 645 points this season with the Hawks, who set a program record for dual meet wins in a season with 14. She finished first in 34 of 41 individual races this season and she combined for 14 wins in 18 relays. She closes her career at Hartwick with over 2,300 points, 101 individual wins, and 49 relay victories and holds College records in the 100 fly, 200 IM, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay, and 800 free relay.
Suderley received All-America honors from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D3hoops.com after leading the Hawks in scoring, rebounds, and free-throw percentage. He was named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year and First Team all-star as well as an ECAC Upstate First Team pick. Suderley led Hartwick to the Empire 8 regular season title, its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and he became the first sophomore in the 83-year history of the program to break the 1,000-point mark.
Women's lacrosse player
Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon HS) and men's soccer player
Pat Thompson (Candor, NY/Candor HS) captured the Margaret Lunn Memorial and the Harry Mosher Memorial Awards, respectively, which are handed out to members of the senior class. Kennedy was named the Lunn recipient for exemplifying athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship, while Thompson was honored with the Mosher for personifying courage, desire, humility and unselfish devotion to his team.
Kennedy was the first Hartwick athlete (male or female) in any sport to be selected to the Empire 8 Sportsperson of the Year team four times. She tied for a team-best 25 goals and was second in points (27), ground balls (38), third in draws (31), and netted a career-high six goals against New Paltz in March. She tallied 75 goals, 17 assists, and 92 points along with 92 ground balls, 76 draw controls, and 24 caused turnovers in her four seasons.
Thompson, a central defender, served as the Hawks' captain and was the only player to start in every game this season for 'Wick. He was an Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection in January. Thompson played in 56 games over the course of his four-year career, while helping 'Wick to 24 wins.
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the winner of the Brunhilde Klinger Memorial Award for Most Outstanding Female Freshman Athlete. This season, she registered 102 points, which tied for second on the team. Zakirova scored 59 goals, assisted on 43 others, and notched 58 steals. She was tabbed the CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Year and a was a second team selection. She was also a CWPA Eastern Championships Second Team pick.
Men's swimmer
Miles Blaney (New York, NY/NYC Lab School) was honored as the recipient of the Tim O'Brien Memorial Award for Outstanding Male Freshman Athlete. He ended his first season with 634.5 points, third-most on the team, and won 18 individual races and eight relays. Blaney was named the Empire 8 Championship Rookie of the Meet after earning E8 titles in the 400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay and second team honors in the 200 Free, 500 Free, and 400 Medley Relay. He was an NCAA honorable mention All-America in the 500 Free, 400 Free Relay, and 800 Free Relay.
Men's tennis senior
Ron Lambertson (Wawarsing, NY) was chosen as the winner of the LeRoy House Jr. Memorial Award, which is presented to the student-athlete connected with the athletic department who has exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to Hartwick Athletics. The recipient of this particular award has also displayed service to the Hartwick community in some capacity outside athletics.
Junior
Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) of the men's swimming and diving team and sophomore
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Acad.) of the women's basketball team were chosen as the male and female winners of the M. Beal Banks Award, which is presented to individuals who have best pursued excellence in their sport to the best of their ability and have enthused others with their dedication and commitment.
Men's basketball guard
Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral Prep) and volleyball middle hitter
Lauren Mausert (Niskayunua, NY/Niskayuna HS) were presented with the Frederick M. Binder Scholar Athlete Award, which goes to the senior male and female athletes who have played a varsity sport at least two years and have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average. Both Blazek and Mausert possess over a 3.8 GPA.
