’Wick Men’s Basketball Opens Season With 89-73 Victory Against Ursinus

GRANTHAM, PA- Four players scored in double figures for the Hartwick men's basketball team as the Hawks defeated Ursinus 89-73 at the Homewood Suites Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Messiah College on Friday afternoon. Hartwick led for all but 1:11 of the game.

In his debut in a Hartwick uniform, Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) led 'Wick with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He was three-of-four from beyond the three-point arc. Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) added 17 points while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and added nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He was 3-of-4 in three pointers.

Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) scored 15 points. Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

"I'm proud of our guys. They played with great energy and enthusiasm," said head coach Todd McGuinness. "Joey and Jared got us off to a good start in the first half. Matt and Kyle played well in the second half to help us seal the victory."

The Hawks started out fast in the first half as they got out to a 54-37 lead at halftime. After the Bears tied the game for the second time with 18:19 to play in the first frame, Hartwick went on a 16-7 run spanning five and a half minutes of game time to lead 20-10 with just under 14 minutes left. Ursinus would close the deficit to six points at 9:48 and only trailed 27-20 at 8:11.

'Wick led 35-27 with a little over five and a half minutes left until the half. Matt Wilson's (Shelton, CT/Franklin and Marshall) traditional three-point play with 5:05 showing on the clock started a 19-10 Hawks' run highlighted by three straight three-point shots from Suderley as Hartwick pulled away for the double-digit intermission lead. The Hawks shot nearly 60% from the floor (59.4%) and made 60% (9-of-15) of their three-point attempts.

In the second half, the Bears would start to chip away at the Hartwick lead and try to mount a comeback. A 12-4 Ursinus run in the first 5:15 of the second stanza narrowed the 'Wick lead to 58-50 at 14:45. It would be as close as the Bears would get as a 17-3 Hawks' run covering 4:39 increased the Hartwick lead to 75-53 at 8:21 as 'Wick seized control of the contest. Ursinus cut the lead to 14 at 2:02, but the Hawks converted four free throws and a layup by Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) to come away with the victory.

Hartwick ended the game shooting 53.4 % in field goals (31-of-58) to 42.1% (24-of-57) for the Bears. The Hawks made 52.4% of their three-point shots (11-of-21) and held Ursinus to 29.4% (5-of-17). The Hawks led in rebounds 41-26 including 28-18 advantage on the defensive glass.

The Hawks move on to the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. They will face the winner of Messiah and Rosemont.
