ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored touchdowns on its opening two drives of the game and never looked back on Saturday in a 33-7 win over visiting Husson University (ME) at Wright Stadium. The Hawks racked up five passing touchdown and accumulated 403 yards of offense while holding the Eagles to a just 147 yards on the day.

Hartwick sophomore quarterback John Garcia (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), who was making his first starting appearance, threw for five touchdowns in the game. Senior wide out Frankie Molina (Middletown, NY/Middletown) only caught four balls all day, but all four were for touchdowns. He accumulated 87 receptions yards on the day.

Senior end R.J. Roth (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) and linebacker Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) paced the defense as they combined for 21 tackles, eight tackles for a loss of 27 yards, and two sacks.

Hartwick would score on its first drive of the day after a Husson punt to open the contest. After five plays and 15 yards, Garcia aired one out to sophomore receiver Travis Samuels (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) who took it 74 yards for the touchdown and the 6-0 lead. The Hawks forced a Husson three-and-out, and following an Eagle punt, Garcia and Molina hooked up for a 50-yard touchdown reception on the first Hartwick play from scrimmage. The Hawks did not convert either extra point and they held a 12-0 lead with 4:34 elapsed in the quarter.

'Wick didn't mount another scoring drive until the final minute of the first period. It would take 85 yards and 15 plays in 5:47 to get into the end zone as Garcia found Molina for a three-yard touchdown pass capping the drive and the Hawks took a 19-0 advantage after Alex Tesoriero's (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) PAT.

The Eagles got into the scoring column on the ensuing possession. An 11-play, 59-yard drive was finished off by a Ryan Stroud to Caleb King three-yard touchdown pass and the extra point cut the deficit to 12 points, 19-7, with 4:36 left in the half.

In the third quarter, the Hartwick offense wasn't able to generate much over the first three drives. The defense would lock down the Eagles, however, as it allowed the visitors to net only six yards over their next three possessions. With under two minutes left in the third and Husson pinned inside its own 25 yard-line, Richie DiVirgilio (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) picked off a Stroud pass and the Hawks had the ball on the Husson 20 with 14 ticks left.

Two straight offsides penalties brought 'Wick closer to the end zone and Garcia's third touchdown connection with Molina of the day gave the Hawks an extra six. After Tesoriero's PAT, the Blue and White took a 26-7 edge after three quarters.

Senior running back Kurtis Ahart (Spencer, NY/Spencer Van Etten) gobbled up minutes on the clock and registered 53 rushing yards on a pair of Hartwick drives early in the fourth quarter. Later, his 38-yard scamper from the Husson 48 put the Hawks first and goal from the 10 with less than five minutes left. After two more plays, a Molina touchdown catch from Garcia from 20 yards out would finish off the Eagles.

For the game, Garcia recorded 290 yards passing on 14 completions to go along with his five touchdown throws. Samuels would generate a team-best 117 yards on just two receptions and Ahart closed the game with 87 yards on 12 carries.

Roth had a game-high 12 tackles with nine unassisted hits. He also recorded four tackles for a loss of 11 yards with one sack. Schweitzer contributed nine tackles, four TFLs, a forced fumble, and a sack. Justin Salvione (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) added seven tackles with a total of eight Hawks notching at least four hits on the afternoon.

Stroud threw 12-for-24 with one pick for the Eagles with just 68 yards and one touchdown. Byron Jackson (46) and Ryan Dorso (43) totaled 89 yards on 21 carries. Defensively, Ellis Throckmorton had the team-high in tackles with eight.

Hartwick returns to action next weekend at Morrisville State University on Saturday, September 14. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
