ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick held its opponent to 40 points or less for the second straight night as it defeated visiting Houghton by a final score of 60-41 Saturday at Lambros Arena. The Hawks forced 21 turnovers in the contest and held the Highlanders to 34% shooting in the victory.
Hartwick's
Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) led her team with a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also added a game-best six assists and two steals.
Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) also scored 13 points and
Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) tallied 10.
Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) and
Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) each had five points.
The Hawks pulled away in the latter part of the first half and maintained a sizeable lead in the second half while cruising to the victory. They improve to 13-3 overall with the triumph.
'Wick trailed by a score of 5-4 after a minute and half of play but quickly took the lead for good with 10 straight points inside the next three minutes to grab a 14-5 edge. The advantage was eight, 19-11, with 12 minutes left in the half but the Highlanders scored the next six to make it a two-point game, 19-17.
Hartwick held Houghton without a point for nearly five minutes and used a 10-2 run to go up by 10, 29-19. Veit and Stone had three-pointers in the spurt for the Hawks.
A
Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) layup with 1:11 left would give the Hawks their largest advantage of 12 heading into halftime up by a count of 33-21.
Any chance of a Houghton (4-11) comeback was dashed in the opening three minutes of the second half as the Hawks went 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line in an 11-2 run which handed them a 44-23 lead. Dumas, Foglia, Aruini, and Foreman each notched points in the pivotal run.
Hartwick opened up its biggest lead of 22 points on a three from Foglia with under 15 minutes to go and the Hawks were up 47-25. The Highlanders would chip away at the Hawks' advantage but they were only able to get it to 16 points with 8:01 left on the clock. The Blue and White scored 10 of the final 15 points to close out the win.
Arduini made 4-of-6 shots in the game and 2-of-3 from three-point range. She added three rebounds, all on the offensive glass. Foglia made a pair of threes with four boards and
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) scored four points and added three assists and three steals. Foreman finished with four points, four rebounds, and three assists.
The Highlanders were led by Kristen Moose's 19 points. She also had eight rebounds. Maisie Pipher tallied eight points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Hartwick will take its undefeated conference record of 6-0 into next weekend's road clashes with Utica and Ithaca. The Hawks play the Pioneers on Friday, January 24 at 8 p.m. They face Ithaca the following day in a rematch of the Hawks' 63-60 win over the Bombers on January 3.
