Smith was a three-sport standout at Hartwick, competing in football, basketball and baseball.
He played four years of football as an end and quarterback, and in 1937 was named to the Little All-America squad.
In baseball he was a strong hitter, leading the team with a .363 clip in 1937, while playing shortstop, third base and the outfield.
To round out his athletic career, he also played three seasons of basketball for the Hawks.
