Nicholas “Nick” Lambros ’59 stands as one of the most influential figures in Hartwick College athletics history. A standout student-athlete, accomplished coach and devoted ambassador for the College, Lambros dedicated more than six decades to advancing Hartwick athletics and shaping the lives of countless student-athletes.
As a student at Hartwick, Lambros excelled in both basketball and baseball, earning four-year starting roles in each sport. His athletic talent earned him a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers following graduation. Beyond his collegiate career, he continued to distinguish himself in competition, capturing three consecutive City Tennis Championships and winning the Oneonta Country Club Golf Championship.
Lambros is best known for his remarkable coaching career. As head coach of the Hartwick men’s basketball program for 21 seasons, he compiled an outstanding 353–191 record and guided the Hawks to national prominence. His leadership earned NCAA Coach of the Year honors in 1979 and 1988, reflecting his ability to build championship-caliber teams while developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
In addition to basketball, Lambros also served as head coach of Hartwick’s baseball and golf programs, demonstrating a rare versatility and commitment to the College’s athletic mission. His influence extended beyond campus through his service as general manager of the Oneonta Yankees baseball club, further strengthening the connection between Hartwick athletics and the local community.
Lambros’ contributions have been recognized through numerous honors. He was the inaugural inductee into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame, earned induction into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, and received the Hartwick College President’s Medal for Extraordinary and Exemplary Loyalty. In 2009, Hartwick dedicated Lambros Arena in his honor, cementing his legacy within the institution he helped define.
Through his success as an athlete, coach and mentor, Nicholas “Nick” Lambros established a standard of excellence that continues to inspire generations of Hartwick student-athletes. His impact on Hartwick athletics remains unmatched, and his legacy endures as one of the foundational figures in the history of the College.
