Shawn Martin '91 is arguably the finest distance runner ever to compete at Hartwick. A men's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field athlete in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Martin still holds multiple College records nearly 20 years after he last donned a blue and white uniform.

Martin earned 1st team All-State honors and placed 10th at the NCAA Cross Country Regionals in 1990. He still holds the Hartwick campus four-mile course record. He finished in the top five in 1,000 meters at the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1989 (5th), 1990 (3rd), and 1991 (2nd), improving his place each year.

He is the 'Wick indoor record holder in the 1,000 meters (2:30.90), 5,000 meters (15:38.80), and is part of the record-holding 4x1,600 meter relay team (18.34.71).

In outdoor track, Martin was part of the 3,200 meter and distance medley relay teams, which both hold Hartwick records.

He placed 3rd at the state championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in both 1989 and 1990 before running to the state title in 1991, earning All-American honors in the 3,000 steeplechase at the NCAA Championships, finishing 8th.

Shawn Martin '91 was inducted into the North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
