Hartwick College Athletics

Tony Elia '71 is one of only 11 players in the storied history of the program to earn All-America honors more than once, and one of a select few players in the history of collegiate soccer to be named All-America four years in a row.

At Hartwick, Elia helped the program to a two-year record of 24-3-1, which included 106 goals for, 22 against, and 16 shutouts. In addition, the team had a pair of deep runs into the NCAA tournament.

In 1969, the Hawthorne, N.J. midfielder scored five goals and led the team in assists with 10 as the Warriors went 10-2-1 and advanced to the NCAA Third Round. He tallied a total of four assists in Hartwick’s two tournament wins over Rensselaer (5-3) and New York University (4-3). Later that season, he was selected to the All-Region and All-America First Teams.

In 1970, he helped the Warriors to a 14-0 start to the season. He scored goals in the NCAA Tournament wins over Columbia (6-1) and Harvard (4-3), with his tally against the Crimson serving as the game winner to send Hartwick to its first Final Four appearance. He, once again, earned All-Region honors and was named to the All-America Second Team for his efforts.

At the time of his induction, Elia’s 10 assists with the team still stood as 8^th-highest single-season total in the Hartwick record books, 44 years after it happened.
