Hawks Sweep Utica to Advance to Empire 8 Semifinals

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The No. 2 seed Hartwick Hawks hosted the No. 7 seed Utica Pioneers in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2025 Empire 8 Women's Volleyball Championship, having swept the Pioneers in their regular season matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
The Blue and White wasted no time seizing control, jumping out to a three-point lead before erupting for an eight-point run to push the set to 22-11 in an instant. The dynamic duo of Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) and Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) set the tone early, connecting repeatedly as Swartz unleashed her attack from the outside. Isabella Gracias (Oneonta, N.Y.) added a thunderous kill before consecutive Utica errors sealed the opening set for the Hawks.

Riding their momentum, the Hawks stayed in rhythm through the second set as Samantha Garback (Tully, N.Y.) and Lucille Walker (Ithaca, N.Y.) made their presence felt in the middle. Walker dominated at the net, powering the Blue and White to a commanding two-set lead despite a late Utica push.

Swartz continued her red-hot stretch after recording 16 kills across the final two regular season contests, elevating her play once again with 18 kills in the quarterfinal win. Sophia Palladino (Owego, N.Y.) closed the door on the Pioneers, joining the attack with four kills in the final set to secure Hartwick's sweep and a spot in the Empire 8 Semifinals.

The Hawks will host the No.3 seed SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Wednesday, November 12 at 6PM.
