Anna Meyer was named head field hockey coach at Hartwick in the summer of 1988 and will enter her 30th season with the Hawks this fall. She currently is tied for fourteenth in coaching victories (317) in NCAA Division III history.
Meyer has molded the Hawks into one of the elite programs in NCAA Division III field hockey. Her field hockey teams have registered a 317-226-3 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times, including two trips to the NCAA Final Four and an appearance in the 1996 NCAA Division III National Championship game. Meyer was named NCAA Division III National Field Hockey Coach of the Year by the NFHCA in 1996.
Since Meyer took over the field hockey program at Hartwick, 11 different players have been named to the All-America Team on 15 occasions. The Hawks have had five First Team All-Americans and 45Â all-region selections. Additionally, Hartwick has had over 120Â players named to the NFHCA All-Academic Squad since 1991.
Under Meyer's guidance, the Hawks made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990. A year later, Hartwick made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four, and finished in third place in the nation while setting a school record with 20 wins.
Hartwick won its first ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey title in 1992.
After a 6-9-1 year in 1993, Hartwick posted 11 consecutive winning seasons, and advancing to a post-season tournament each year, until a 9-9 mark in 2005.
In 1995, the Hawks again won the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Title. Many of those players returned a year later to bring Hartwick back to the NCAA Final Four, where the Hawks lost the national championship game by a 2-1 margin to The College of New Jersey.
In 2004, Meyer guided the Hawks to their second Empire 8 Conference Championship and an appearance in the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. She also received Empire 8 Coach of the Year honors.
In addition to her field hockey coaching duties, Meyer is an instructor in Hartwick's Department of Physical Education. Meyer also coached women's lacrosse at Hartwick for 11 years and registered a career record of 123-64. Her lacrosse squads made nine consecutive trips to postseason play during one streak, including a NCAA Final Four appearance in 1998. She was named National Coach of the Year in lacrosse in 1998, making her one of just a handful of coaches to have earned the honor in two different sports.
Meyer received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Cortland State in 1980. She earned a Master of Science in Education, with a concentration in athletic administration, in 1988 from James Madison University.
While at Cortland State, Meyer played three years of lacrosse and four seasons of field hockey. She captained the field hockey squad her senior season and helped the Red Dragons to a state championship that year. On the lacrosse field, Meyer played on a team that placed third at the Division II national tournament in her junior campaign.
After graduating from Cortland State, Meyer spent six years as a physical education and math instructor and head coach of field hockey, men's and women's diving and women's softball at The Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. In 1986, she went to James Madison as assistant coach for field hockey and lacrosse. She was named head lacrosse coach at Cortland State for the 1988 season.
She has coached in the United States Field Hockey Association futures program and was twice a coach of the New York State 15-and-under team at the National USFHA Futures Tournament.
