Men’s Soccer Guts Out 2-1 Win at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY – Hartwick's men's soccer team came from behind for a big 2-1 victory over Syracuse (2-11) on Tuesday night to extend its unbeaten streak to eight games. Sam Wright (Newquay, England/Bryant & Stratton) knotted the score in the final minute of the opening half and Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar) provided the game-winner early in the second half for the Hawks. The victory for 'Wick is the first over the Orange in four tries and improves its all-time series record to 17-11-5.
The Hawks had goal-scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the game. Junior Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand/John McGlasham) and sophomore Nick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston N.) fired four shots at the Orange goal, two of which forcing saves from SU's Ryan Jones. Despite a 5-0 shot advantage for the Hawks in the early going, it was the Orange that would strike first. L.J. Papaleo provided the header past Hartwick keeper Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) with Hansen Woodruff and Pete Hill providing assists in the 31st minute.
The Hawks maintained their poise and finally were rewarded with just 29 seconds left in the half to even up the match at 1-1. An ever-dangerous Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelburg College) corner brought about the tying goal. His kick found senior Brian Gordon (Erskine, Scotland/Univ. of Albany) who provided the game-winner on Saturday against Florida Atlantic. Gordon got the ball to Wright and his shot from the top of the box hit the top left corner of the goal. The tally was the fourth of the season out of 15 that has originated from a Botting corner.
Eight minutes into the second half, Summers would net his fourth of the season to give 'Wick the lead for the first time. The sophomore forward found some space between two Syracuse backs and buried his shot past Jones for the 2-1 edge.
Both teams traded opportunities over the next 30 minutes with each team taking four shots. Summers had the lone shot on target which was stopped by Jones and Vuolo denied Tom Perevegyencev and Woodruff in the span.
Perevegyencev put another shot over the crossbar with just over a minute left and had another shot blocked with under 10 seconds to go. The rebound went to Sean Summerville, but his effort was stopped by Vuolo to preserve the victory.
The Hawks outshot the Orange 13-9 on the night and held a 5-2 edge in corners. Vuolo and Jones both notched three saves for their respective teams.
Hartwick (8-2-2) is off for close to two weeks before traveling to Bowling Green on Sunday, Oct. 25. The Hawks then host their last MAC game on Oct. 31 against Western Michigan.
