Field Hockey Wins 10th With 1-0 Shutout of Utica

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick won its 10th match of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 shutout win over Utica (7-8, 3-3 E8) at Wright Stadium. Senior Jenny Murphy (Vineyard haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) scored the game's only goal 1:03 into the second half to lift the Hawks to the victory. 'Wick maintains second place in the Empire 8 standings with a 4-1 mark, one game back of first-place Stevens with one conference match remaining next Saturday.
The game was delayed a half hour due to lightning just before the start of the game. After the match finally got underway, Hartwick dominated the Pioneers from start to finish. The Hawks did not allow a shot until the final 15 minutes of the game. The Blue and White finished with a 15-2 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners, thoroughly outplaying the visitors.
Despite outshooting Utica 7-0 in the opening half, the game remained a 0-0 deadlock at the break. Murphy gave the Hawks all the offense they'd need after just 63 seconds in the second half. She took a pass from Angela Eberly (Harpursville, NY/Harpursville) directly off a penalty corner on the left side and ripped a far-post shot past Pioneer goalie Monica Storms. It was Murphy's first tally of the season.
The Hawks were unlucky to score more goals on the day. The post denied the 'Wick on three separate occasions. Two shots in the first half by Murphy struck iron and Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) also hit the post.
The Pioneers put two shots on Hartwick's cage in the later stages of the match that were easily turned aside by Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who earned her fourth shutout of the season.
The Hawks host nationally ranked Skidmore in their next match on Wednesday. The 11th ranked Thoroughbreds entered the week with a 10-3 record.
