Hartwick Field Hockey Wins Third Straight With 3-0 Blanking of Elmira

ONEONTA, NY – Junior Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) scored two goals to guide Hartwick's field hockey team to a 3-0 shutout of visiting Elmira on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The victory is Hartwick's third straight and moves the team into a first-place tie with Utica atop the Empire 8 standings. The winless Soaring Eagles drop to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Hawks dashed out to a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the match. Freshman Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) sent the ball into the circle where Elmira keeper Jalene McCullough attempted to let the roll either roll wide or into the goal for a dead ball. The ball, however caromed off the post allowing Kaye to knock home the rebound for the Hartwick lead.
With 8:01 left in the first half, the Hartwick advantage was increased as Kimble did all the work to get the ball to Kaye for her team-best fifth goal of the year. Kimble dribbled into the circle on the left side of the goal and slipped a pass to Kaye before colliding with McCollough who came out on the play. Kaye was there to finish off the play to give the Hawks some breathing room heading into the second half.
With 15 and a half minutes left in the contest, Morgan Cestari (Lake Grove, NY/Centerreach) picked up her second goal of the year as she tallied from in close. Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) earned the assists on the play for her first point in a 'Wick uniform.
Hartwick ended the match with a 27-8 edge in shots and a 15-10 advantage in corners.
'Wick keepers Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.) combined for four saves to earn the shutout. McCullough stopped 15 shots for the Soaring Eagles.
The Hawks will hit the road for the next three games. 'Wick travels to Colgate University for a match with Morrisville on Oct. 7th before getting back to conference play at Washington & Jefferson one week from today.
