SYRACUSE, NY - 'Wick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Le Moyne on Saturday in their final competition of the semester. The Hartwick men defeated the Dolphins 131-97 while the Hawk women's team came up short 144-97. The men's team improves its head-to-head record to 7-1. The women close out the semester 5-3.
Six different Hartwick swimmers earned first-place finishes on the day on the men's side. Sophomores Michael Phillips (Austin, TX), Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY), Nate Quinn (Fonda, NY), and freshmen Travis Bueno (Clifton Park, NY), Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA), and Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) each won events for 'Wick.
Kleso led the afternoon with two firsts in the 1000 freestyle (10:40.63) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.14). Phillips took top honors in the 200 IM (2:01.56). Quinn and Morey split victories in the diving events. Quinn earned a score of 153.95 with Morey accumulating 241.15 in their respective wins.
Bueno won the 1000 freestyle in 10:40.63 and Willcox was 1st in the 100 fly (56.46). Willcox and Kleso also combined with William MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA) for 1st in the 200 medley relay. MacElveen, Durocher, Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, SC) and Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX) were tops in the 200 free relay.
Seniors Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) and Brittany Sherburn (Franconia, NH) placed first in their respective events for the Hartwick women. Gray earned first place in the 1000 free in 11:22.68. She was also 2nd in the 500 free. Sherburn took 1st and 2nd in the two diving events.
Sophomores Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) and Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) each turned in a pair of second-place efforts for the Hawks. Ha was 2nd in the 200 IM and 100 fly, and Smith placed 2nd in the 50 free (two hundredths of a second out of first) and in the 100 backstroke.
Junior Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA), sophomore Sam McFarland (Derry, PA), and freshman Whitney Fletcher (Superior, CO) also earned seconds in their respective races. Evans was second in the 1000 free, McFarland in the 200 free, and Fletcher in the 100 breaststroke.
Both Hartwick teams will not compete again until 2010. The Hawks will host a tri-meet with Springfield and Union at Moyer Pool on January 9th in their next competitions.
