Field Hockey Picks Up 1-0 Win Over Ithaca

ITHACA, NY — Senior Samantha Galm (Kingston, NY/Kingston) scored 12 minutes into the second half to lift the Hartwick College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory in its Empire 8 opener over Ithaca on Saturday. The Hawks improve to 4-3 overall. The Bombers fall to 2-5 and 0-2 in the Empire 8.
The Hawks dominated the Bombers early with an 11-1 advantage in shots over the first 35 minutes but didn't break through the Ithaca defense until the 47:19 mark when senior Morgan Cestari (Lake Grove, NY/Centrereach) passed the ball from the left post across the goal mouth to Galm who finished the play for her team-best fourth goal of the season.
The Bombers pressed for the tying goal late in the contest with four penalty corners and three shots in the final 10 minutes of action. All three shots, however, were off target enabling the Hawks to secure the victory.
'Wick held a huge 18-6 edge in shots for the match and took 14 penalty corners to Ithaca's eight. Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) took six of Hartwick's shots on goal for the day. Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) each took three.
Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) recorded shutout number two on the year with two stops in the Hawks' cage. Ithaca's Chelsea Walsh made 13 saves to keep the match close.
Hartwick is back home for a non-conference match with Hamilton College on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
