ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's men's basketball team dropped a 71-50 decision to visiting Nazareth on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The Hawks fall to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8 standings. Nazareth improves to 6-3 and stays unbeaten in the Empire 8 at 3-0.
The Golden Flyers jumped out to an early lead and held a 37-16 edge at the end of the first half. Naz shot 53.6% from the field in the opening half making 15 of its 28 shots. The Flyers held Hartwick to just 26.9% shooting in the first 20 minutes of action.
Early in the second half, the Hawks got the lead down to 18 points, but Nazareth maintained an edge of 20 points or better for much of the stanza. The Hawks shot 43% in the second half on 9-of-21 shooting and finished the game hitting 34% from the floor. Naz cooled off in the second session making just 33% of its shots and ended the contest connecting on 42.6% as a team.
Senior Corey McAdam paced Naz with 21 points, including 12 in the first half. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Phil Scaffidi added 12 points and Greg Lothridge netted nine points in the first half and finished with 11.
Hartwick guard Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral) led his team with 14 points. James Mantas (Niskayuna, NY/CBA) and Kyle Phillips (Ashland, MA/Ashland) each scored seven.
The Hawks host St. John Fisher at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Cardinals earned a 63-50 win at Stevens earlier today to improve to 2-0.
