First-Place St. John Fisher Sinks Hartwick Men's Hoop Team

PITTSFORD, NY - 'Wick's men's basketball team fell to St. John Fisher 73-59 on Saturday evening at Manning and Napier Gym in Rochester. The loss drops Hartwick's record to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The first-place Cardinals improve to 15-3 and stay perfect in the Empire 8 at 9-0.

Fisher, which led 31-25 at the break, took control of the game in the second half of play with an 11-4 run to start the frame. The Cardinal lead swelled to 15 points, 54-39, with eight minutes to play and the Hawks were not able to cut the deficit to under 11 points the rest of the contest.

Senior center Kyle Phillips (Ashland, MA/Ashland) paced Hartwick with game-highs of 18 points (9-of15 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral Prep) added 15 points and James Mantas (Niskayuna, NY/CBA) added 10 points and dished out five assists.

Fisher was led by Jordan Gettings and Michael Wopperer who each netted 15 points. Matt Newman contributed 12.

The Hawks hit 46% from the floor as a team making 25 of their 54 shots. The Cardinals were slightly better hitting 27-of-51 (53%). 'Wick managed just one three-pointer on the day and hit 10% from beyond the three-point arc, both season-lows.

Hartwick heads back to Lambros Arena next weekend for a showdown with Elmira. The Hawks and Soaring Eagles tangle on Friday, January 29th at 8 p.m.
