Swimming and Diving Teams Split at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY - Hartwick College's men's and women's swimming and diving teams split on the road on Sunday at Nazareth. The 'Wick men improved to 9-3 with a 170-109 win over the Golden Flyers while the Hawk women fell to 6-6 with a 170-121 setback.

The Hartwick women's team earned five first-place efforts at the meet led by sophomore Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), who earned three individual victories and teamed up for another in one of two relays on the day. Smith was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.76, the 50 freestyle (28.50), and the 200 backstroke (2:30.17). She also joined forces with freshman Whitney Fletcher (Superior, CO), sophomore Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), and sophomore Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA) for a first-place showing the 200 medley relay in 2:06.93.

Senior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) also took first for the Hawks in the 800 freestyle with a time of 9:52.99.

For the 'Wick men, who won 10 of 16 races on the afternoon, sophomore Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) took down a pair of Nazareth pool records, including one that had stood for 28 years. Phillips' time of 2:29.65 in the 200 breaststroke broke Howard Seidman's (Alfred) time of 2:29.91, set in 1982. Phillips also set the pool record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.23, shattering Page Beecher's (Alfred) 2007 mark of 2:15.15. In total, Phillips won three races on the day, with his third win coming in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.54).

Freshman Travis Bueno (Clifton Park, NY) equaled Phillips' victory total with a trio of triumphs. He claimed the top spot in the 800 freestyle (9:14.73), the 200 freestyle (2:06.56) by edging out teammate Tim George (Wiscasset, ME) by 0.43 seconds, and took first in the 400 free (4:28.65).

Diver Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) took first place in both 1-meter and 3-meter events for Hartwick. He earned scores of 263.47 in the 1-meter event and 271.05 in the 3-meter competition. Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH) won the 100 backstroke event in 1:04.31 and Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) was a winner in the 200 fly in 2:19.38.

Hartwick's teams will be on the road again next weekend as they take on a trio of SUNYAC opponents in western New York. The Hawks will travel to Fredonia for quad-meets with the Blue Devils, Oneonta State, and Cortland on January 30th.
