Stevens Outlasts ’Wick Field Hockey Team in Overtime 1-0

HOBOKEN, NJ– Stevens Institute of Technology scored 5:43 into overtime for a 1-0 win over visiting Hartwick College (3-7, 1-2 E8) in an Empire 8 battle this afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Stevens controlled the opening half, applying pressure deep in the Hawk zone. The Ducks held a 7-2 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners. Neither team, however, was able to find the net in the opening 35 minutes.
Hartwick had a strong opportunity late in regulation when sophomore forward Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) carried into the striking circle and fired a shot at the left corner that appeared to be headed in but stopped short by Duck goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs.
In overtime, the Ducks generated four corners and four shots early in the extra period. Following a Stevens corner, Hartwick was able to push out on a 2-on-1 breakaway but Ducks goalie Griggs cut down the angle, and broke up the promising chance for the Hawks.
Moments later, Steven's Mallory Swanson carried into the circle and put a shot on goal. The initial shot was saved by senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, N.Y/Niskayuna)  but the ball bounced to Caitlin Chamberlain who was charging in from the right side and the freshman put home the game-winner.
Chapman tallied 11 saves. Griggs earned the win for the Ducks making five saves. Stevens, which ended the game with a 22-8 edge in shots and a 23-5 advantage in corners, improves to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8. The Hawks are 1-2 in the conference standings and 2-7 overall.
Hartwick twill return home on Wednesday, October 6th for a non-conference game with Morrisville at 7:00 p.m.
