Lefeber’s Pair Lifts Hawks Past Morrisville State 2-0

ONEONTA, NY – Freshman Megan Lefeber (Riverton, CT/Northwestern Regional) scored her first two collegiate goals for the Hartwick College Hawks (3-7) this evening in a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Morrisville State (5-7) in a non-conference match up at Wright Stadium. The victory snaps a four-game winless streak for the Hawks heading into Saturday's big Empire 8 game at Utica.
The Hawks got on the board with two minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Kelsey Kimble (Dingsmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) did all the work, dribbling from 40 yards away all the way to goal. She collided with Mustangs' goalie Kelsey Pellegrino but still managed to get the ball past her where Lefeber connected on the loose ball for the 1-0 lead. Just minutes before the opening goal, defender Angela Eberly (Harpursville, NY/Harpursville) had a blast from the top of the circle smack off the far post. The Hawks would close off the half holding an advantage in shots, 8-6, and penalty corners, 9-6.
With roughly 30 minutes to play in the game, Katie Cikatz (Salem, CT/East Lyme) appeared to give Hartwick a two-goal lead with a drive from outside the circle. The officials, however, deemed no player made contact before the ball went in and the game remained 1-0.
Morrisville held off the Hartwick offense for the first 18 minutes of the second half until Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) set up Lebefer for her second goal of the night. Barton played a ball from the left side of the Mustang goal all the way to the right side to Lefeber who blasted a 10-yard shot past Pellegrino. Morrisville had one last opportunity in the final seconds of play when Abby Muraco attempted a shot off a corner that went wide.
The Mustangs mustered five shots in the second half, but none made it by Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who recorded seven saves and earned her 8th career shutout. The Hawks finished the night with more shots (15-11) and penalty corners (15-12) than the visitors. Pellegrino ended the night with nine saves for Morrisville.
Hartwick takes on Utica College on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The Hawks are 1-2 in the Empire 8 and in fifth place with three matches remaining on the schedule.
