Utica Trips Up Field Hockey 2-1 in Overtime

UTICA, NY – Hartwick College (3-8, 1-3 E8) fell to Empire 8 Conference rival Utica College (5-7, 3-1 E8) tonight 2-1 overtime at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Junior midfielder Avion Ashton netted the game-winner 1:54 into the first overtime period, off a penalty corner from senior Erin Murphy. Ashton beat Hartwick goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) on the lower left side.
Jessica Ahearn opened the scoring on the day for the Pioneers' when she netted her fourth goal of the season off a rebound in the 34th minute.
Senior Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) netted the equalizer for Hartwick in the 55th minute, which was her third goal of the season. Kaye tipped home a shot from the stick of Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) to knot the score at 1-1.
Chapman recorded 12 saves for the Hawks, while Monica Storms picked up seven saves for Utica. The Pioneers held in advantage in shots (16-9) and penalty corners, (14-4).
The victory for the Pioneers gives them three conference wins along with Washington & Jefferson and Stevens and virtually locks them up a place in the Empire 8 semifinals. The Hawks are still very much alive for a playoff spot but face a must-win next Saturday at home against Nazareth.
Hartwick returns home on Tuesday when to host Union in a non conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
