ONEONTA, NY - The Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks swept Hartwick at Moyer Pool, spoiling the Hawks' Senior Recognition/Parent Appreciation Meet on Saturday. Both Duck teams, which each arrived in Oneonta ranked 9th in the latest Division III national polls, combined for eight Moyer Pool records on the day. The Hartwick women fell by a 164-128 margin. The 'Wick men lost for the first time in 2011, by a count of 177-109.
Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) secured the lone swimming victory for the Hartwick women in the 200 individual medley. She secured a time of 2:12.13 in the event. Ha would also earn a pair of second-place efforts for the Hawks. She placed second in the100 fly (1:00.08) and 200 fly (2:14.91) events.
Claire Nelson (South Hadley, MA) earned a pair of seconds and Sam McFarland (Derry, PA) swam a trio of thirds for the Hawks. Nelson was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.86) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.90). McFarland was third in the 100 free (56.96), 200 free (2:00.42), and 500 free (5:27.18).
Junior Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) placed third in both the 50 free (25.67) and 200 backstroke (2:17.95). She was also 4th in the 100 backstroke race in her final career home meet. Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA) took both diving events earning a 1-meter score of 200.55 and a 3-meter score of 193.50.
The Ducks, who won 13 of 14 races, set five pool records on the day in the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 400 free relay events. Laura Barito's NCAA "B" cut time of 52.25 in the 100 free smashed a 27-year old record set by Hartwick's Bethany Carter (53.50) in 1984.
Junior Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) earned a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle and nearly matched the feat in two other races. He won the 200 free with a time of 1:45.43 and was edged out by Stevens' John Hu by just 0.15 seconds in the 200 breaststroke. Later on in the meet, Evan Wilson, Hu, and Phillips all finished within 0.30 seconds of one another. Phillips took third with a time of 1:58.47.
Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) and Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY) registered second-place swims on the day for Hartwick. Willcox was second in the 200 fly (2:00.27). He was also third in the 100 fly (55.14). Grunewald placed second in the 500 free (4:53.98). He was also third in the 1000 free (10:04.50).
Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX) was third in both the 100 back (55.58) and 200 back (2:01.60) events. John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA) was third in the 100 breast (1:01.53) and 50 free (22.73). Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) swept the diving events with a score of 228.35 in the 1-meter competition and 222.45 in the 3-meter event.
Stevens earned pool records in both relay events and 100 breast. The Ducks also won 13 of 14 swimming events.
The day served as the final home meets for Hartwick seniors Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), Sam Rosenthal (Takoma Park, MD), Steven Sayles (Mendon, NY), Jon Stein (Falmouth, ME), Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA), Jennifer Sommerville (Pittsfield, MA), Carly White (Hudson, MA), and Smith.
Both Hartwick teams are now off until February 23rd when they travel to Webster, NY for the start of the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championship Meets.
