CORTLAND, NY – Junior Danielle Hand scored a goal in each half to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 3-1 win over Hartwick on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 7-0 with the victory, while the Hawks fall to 2-4 on the year.
Sophomore Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) tallied Hartwick's goal. Senior goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) stopped five shots.
Sophomore Danielle Groneman also scored for Cortland with seniors Brenda Semit and Brittany Wilson and sophomore Sara Woodward collecting assists. Senior goalie Ashley Hughes made four saves, all in the second half.
Hand gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead 24 minutes, 26 seconds into the game when she deflected Wilson's hard pass at the left post. The game remained 1-0, with much of the play throughout the midfield, until 7:31 into the second half as Hand scored her second of the game and fifth of the season. Woodward touched a loose ball in front that Hand jumped on and sent into the left side of the cage.
A little over six minutes later, the Hawks made it a 2-1 game as they pressured the Red Dragons. After Hughes denied a shot by freshman Gabi Ferraro (Kingston, NY/Kingston), the ball bounced out to the right side where Kimble one-timed a shot into the open goal for her team-high third goal of the season.
Groneman gave the Red Dragons back their two-goal lead at 54:59 when she redirected Semit's long blast inside the left post. Hartwick pressed late in the game, receiving six penalty corners to the Red Dragons' one in the last 10 minutes of action. Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene), Angela Eberly (Harpursville, NY/Harpursville), and Kimble each fired shots on the Cortland cage in the span, but Hughes stopped all three to secure the win.
Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 Conference play this Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks host Washington & Jefferson at 11 a.m.
