RPI Tops Hartwick Field Hockey in Overtime 2-1

ONEONTA, NY – Despite a career high 16 saves from Hartwick senior goalie, Mackenzie Chapman (Queensbury, NY/Niskayuna),visiting RPI (2-1) scored 4:04 into the 1st overtime to take down the Hawks 2-1 at Wright Stadium this evening.
RPI's Sandy Turnbull (Upperville, VA/Chatham Hall) scored the game-winner four minutes and four seconds into the overtime period as she popped a shot from in close up and over Chapman. Tori Elliott (Hamstead, NH/Pinkerton Acad.) earned the assist.
The Hawks held a 1-0 lead throughout the second half until Holly Dupuis (Brookfield, MA/Worcester Academy) blasted a shot from the circle that deflected in off a Hartwick defender and in with only 5:11 left in the contest to send the game into overtime.
Hartwick took the lead in the first half when senior Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) fed a pass from the right wing into the center of the arc. Sophomore Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) was there to bury a shot for her second goal of the season at the 26:03 mark.
The Engineers held advantages in shots (23-9) and penalty corners (14-8) in the match. The loss spoils a solid effort from Chapman who broke her previous best by three saves. She stopped 13 last season in a 2-1 win over Hamilton and equaled the feat in 2008 in a 1-0 setback to Cortland.
Tonight, Chapman stopped eight shots in the first half alone, including a furious 10-second span where she blocked four straight point-blank shots from the Engineers with just over a minute to play. RPI's Briana Earle
The loss snaps a two-game Hartwick winning streak over the Engineers. In the last five games with RPI, four have been one-goal games and three have made it to overtime.
The Hawks will travel to St. Lawrence this Saturday, September 11th for a 12:00 start.
