Hartwick Swimming and Diving Teams Down Alfred University

ALFRED, NY - Hartwick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a big day at Alfred on Saturday with both teams coming away with victories. The 'Wick men won by a 139-95 margin. The Hartwick women dominated in a 156-78 triumph.

The men's team, which improves to 9-3 in head-to-head competition for the season and 3-0 in 2011, came away with first-place finishes in seven events on the day. Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) and Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) each won two events to pace the Hawks. Phillips won the 200 individual medley in 2:03.09 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.50. Morey was tops in both diving events earning a score of 247.55 in the 1-meter event and 263.15 in the 3-meter competition.

Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY) and Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA) earned the other two individual first for the Hawks. Grunewald was tops in the 1000 freestyle (10:05.07). Kleso swam a strong race in the 500 free in a time of 4:56.08.

The Hartwick 400 medley relay team of Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX), John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA), Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA), and Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ) started the day of for the Blue and White with a first-place time of 3:40.95.

The women's team upped its season mark to 7-5 with the victory over the Saxons. Hartwick athletes won 12 of 13 events and earned 1-2-3 finishes in five different races. In addition, eight different Hawks were victors in their respective events.

Senior Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA), and junior Sam McFarland (Derry, PA) each won two individual races for 'Wick. Evans (pictured) won the distance freestyle events taking the 1000 free (11:37.51) and the 500 free (5:41.87). McFarland had solid swims in the 200 free (2:02.41) and the 100 free (56.30).

Junior Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), freshman Claire Nelson (South Hadley, MA), sophomore Mallory Weber (Naperville, IL), and junior Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) each earned top billing on the afternoon. Smith was first in the 200 backstroke (2:20.92). Nelson won the 200 breaststroke (2:32.95). Weber secured a victory in the 200 fly (2:21.53), and Ha was victorious in the 200 individual medley (2:15.68).

Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA) and Katie Monbaron (Southington, CT) split the diving events. Bowker earned a score of 204.50 in the 1-meter competition. Monbaron (183.40) then edged out Bowker (183.05) in the 1-meter event.

Smith, Nelson, Ha, and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) earned 11 points in the 400 medley relay, and McFarland, Weber, Sarah Uminski (Falmouth, ME), and Ha did the same in the 400 free relay to close the day.

Hartwick's swimming and diving teams are home for the first time in the New Year in their next meets. Both squads host Skidmore at Moyer Pool on Sunday, January 23rd at 1 p.m.
