Five Second-Half Goals Propels Field Hockey Over Union, 5-2

SCHENECTADY, NY – Hartwick's field hockey team trailed by a 2-0 margin at halftime but five unanswered goals in the second half lifted the Hawks past host Union College Tuesday at Bailey Field in Schenectady. Hartwick has now won four straight games and improves to 6-6 overall. The Dutchwomen fall to 2-10.
Junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) led Hartwick with five points with one goal and three assists. Senior Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) notched a pair of goals, and Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, NY/Foxboro) and Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) each added tallies.
Union grabbed the early lead as Darcy Berger scored off an Isabel Zellweger rebound in front just 3:20 into the game. The Dutchwomen continued to pressure the Hawks' cage, out-shooting the visitors 6-1 over the next 22 minutes. Zellweger then made it 2-0 with 7:33 remaining in the opening half with a shot from 10 yards out following an Ali Flake corner.
The Hawks got a lift early in the second half as the Dutchwomen were awarded a penalty stroke 4:02 into the period. Hartwick goalkeeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) came up with the big save on Natalie Engel's shot and the Hartwick deficit stayed at two goals.
Campbell's save triggered a Hartwick rally as the Blue and White would score three times in the next seven and a half minutes. Flewelling got the Hawks' first two goals, just 21 seconds apart to tie the game. She scored off a scramble in front of the Union goal at the 45:17 mark. Kimble then found her again at 45:38 as she tallied past Dutchwomen goalie Corey Hedges to even the game.
Carlson put the Hawks up for good at the 47:32 mark for 'Wick's third goal in two minutes and 15 seconds. She tucked her shot inside the Union post with Kimble earning an assist on the Hawks' third straight goal.
Kimble gave the Hawks a two-goal advantage with 13:16 remaining in the game. She stole an errant pass from a Union defender, beat another defender, and then moved past Hedges and slipped the ball into an open goal to make the score 4-2.
Baughman closed out the scoring with 8:13 left in the contest. She redirected a shot from Megan Lefeber (Riverton, CT/Northwestern) from five yards out for her second tally of the year.
Campbell would end the game with eight saves. Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) played the final four minutes in the Hawks' cage but did not have to make a stop. Hedges made seven stops for the Dutchwomen.
Hartwick hosts Utica College on Saturday, October 15 at noon at Wright Stadium in its next game. The Hawks and Pioneers are both tied for first place in the Empire 8 Conference, along with Stevens and Washington & Jefferson.
