ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick field hockey cut a three-goal deficit to one in the second half, but a pair of Red Dragon goals in the final six and a half minutes gave Oneonta State a 6-3 win on Wednesday night at All College Field. The Hawks' loss is just the third against the Red Dragons in the last 11 meetings between the two sides dating back to 2000.
Junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) scored two goals to lead the Hawks, who fall to 6-8 overall. The Red Dragons improve to 11-5.
Hartwick grabbed an early lead as Kimble tallied 1:50 into the game on the first scoring chance for either team. She scored on a backhand after dribbling around Oneonta keeper Tess Tracy for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Dragons answered with two tallies before the nine-minute mark. Andrea Day scored with Megan Warning assisting at the 4:49 mark to tie the score, and Ashley Morgan gave the hosts the lead 3:49 later.
Warning extended Oneonta State's advantage 6:35 before halftime. It marked her 13th tally of the season.
Two minutes, 15 seconds into the second half, the Red Dragons scored their fourth goal of the game as Suzanne Wright tracked down a ball down the sideline and cut it towards the Hawks' goal. Wright broke in with Hartwick goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) and beat her low for the 4-1 lead.
The Hawks fought back with two goals in a 10-minute span. Kimble beat Tracy on a penalty stroke at the 48:03 mark of the game. Senior Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) then tipped in an Abby Wentlent (Greene, NY/Greene) drive with 11:57 showing on the clock and the Hawks trailed by a single goal, 4-3.
Just 2:39 after Flewelling's goal, Morgan put Oneonta back in front by two as she finished off a scramble past 'Wick goalie Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene). Warning then completed her five-point night and closed out the scoring as she redirected a Morgan shot.
The Red Dragons ended the game with a 16-8 edge in shots and a slight 8-7 margin in penalty corners. Campbell made two saves in the opening 40:45 for the Hawks. Staley stopped three in the final 29:15 and defender Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) earned a defensive save.
Warning and Morgan each ended the game with two goals and an assist apiece for SUCO. Tracy made four saves in the Red Dragon cage. Emma Wasserman played the final 10:24.
Hartwick next plays at home on Saturday, October 22 against Stevens Institute of Technology (8-6, 4-1 E8) in an Empire 8 Conference game beginning at 10 a.m.
