Stevens Scores Three First-Half Goals to Defeat Hartwick Field Hockey, 3-1

Kelsey Kimble
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick field hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Stevens on Saturday at Wright Stadium. Three first-half Duck goals gave the visitors the big lead. The Hawks cut the lead to two with roughly 18 minutes to play but could get no closer.
Despite the loss, the Hawks still are in control of their own destiny in terms of securing an Empire 8 playoff berth. Hartwick is currently tied with Nazareth for fourth place in the standings. The Hawks and Golden Flyers play in their conference regular-season finale next Saturday with a playoff spot on the line.
Stevens' Rachel Chavez opened the scoring 2:56 into the contest. Hartwick goalkeeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) made a stop on a Ducks' shot, but Chavez was right in front to stuff in the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
The game remained a one-goal game for close to 20 minutes until Samantha Weisman tallied to extend Stevens' advantage. Megan Traub earned an assist as she slid the ball in the circle to the left side of goal to Weisman, who scored from 10 yards out. Campbell got a piece of Weisman's shot but couldn't keep the ball out and the Ducks were in front 2-0.
Chavez added her second of the game with 2:42 left in the opening half. Her sister Marguerite picked up the assist on the play.
Hartwick got back into the game after 17:04 had elapsed in the second half. Leading scorer Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) beat Stevens' goalie Gabriella Sanchez on the dribble and tucked the ball into an empty goal on a back-hander and the Hawks cut the deficit to 3-1. For Kimble, it marked the fourth straight game she has found the net. She has accumulated six goals and three assists in Hartwick's last four matches.
The Ducks' defense kept the Hawks at bay over the final 18 minutes of the game. Hartwick earned one penalty corner but did not register another shot.
Hartwick trailed in both shots (30-4) and corners (18-3) for the match. Campbell made seven saves in the opening 35 minutes. Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) relieved her at halftime and stopped nine Duck shots. Sarah MacDougall (Watertown, MA/Watertown) registered a defensive save for the Hawks. Sanchez finished the match with one stop for Stevens.
The game served as senior day for the Hawks' five members of the Class of 2012. In a ceremony prior to the game, the program recognized Anna Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls), Stephanie Washburn (Greene, NY/Greene), and manager Dan Valliere (Lebanon, NH).
Hartwick next plays on Wednesday October 26 at home against nationally sixth-ranked Skidmore beginning at 4 p.m.
