#5 Skidmore Scores Three in Second Half to Defeat Hartwick Field Hockey Team, 3-0

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick turned in a spirited effort on Wednesday evening against nationally 5th ranked Skidmore, but the visiting Thoroughbreds scored three times in the second half of play to earn a 3-0 win over the Hawks. With the loss, Hartwick slips to 6-10 on the year. Skidmore improves to 15-1.
Hartwick held off the high-powered Skidmore offense throughout the first half of play. The Thoroughbreds controlled play territorially over the first 35 minutes of action as they out-shot the Hawks by a 16-1 margin and took 14 penalty corners. However, Hawk goalkeeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) was up to the task as she stopped all 12 shots in target to keep the game level.
Skidmore's best chance of the half came at the 17:07 mark when the Thoroughbreds were awarded a penalty stroke. Kelly Blackhurst (North River, NY/Johnsburg) took the stroke but Campbell dove to her right to make a pad save and the game remained at zeros.
Hartwick junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) had the lone shot for the Hawks early in the first half but it was blocked by a Thoroughbred defender.
Skidmore broke through the Hawk defense 9:36 into the second half for a 1-0 lead. Jackie Slocombe (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) played a long ball from the left side line to the front of Hartwick's goal where Lauren Tobias (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) tipped it in. She got a stick on the ball, which popped up and over Campbell. The ball bounced and trickled over the line and Skidmore was in front.
Six minutes, six seconds later, Skidmore got an insurance goal as Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) tallied off a Blackhurst assist. Blackhurst delivered a short pass in the circle to Rosencrans who drove a shot past Campbell for the tally.
The Hawks, following a timeout, immediately created chances offensively. Anna Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) ripped a shot wide 20 seconds after the second Skidmore tally. Over the next 10 minutes, the Hawks earned three penalty corners and out-shot the visitors, 2-0. Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) got a shot off that was blocked following a scramble in the circle and Kimble later had a shot go wide.
Skidmore would put the game away on their next offensive opportunity at the 60:43 mark. Rosencrans brought the ball along the end line and centered for Blackhurst who scored far-post for a 3-0 advantage.
In the second half of the game, The Thoroughbreds held a slim 6-3 edge in shots. The Hawks took more penalty corners by a 4-3 margin.
Hartwick has one regular season game remaining on their schedule which occurs this Saturday. The Hawks travel to Nazareth for a 1 p.m. game. The winner secures the fourth seed in the Empire 8 playoffs in early November.
