ONEONTA, NY – Visiting St. Lawrence University scored three times in the opening half en route to a 4-0 shutout of Hartwick's field hockey team on Saturday at Wright Stadium. With the setback, the Hawks slip to 1-2 on the season. The victory improves the Saints record to 2-1.
The Saints jumped out on top 3:40 into the game after a Hartwick infraction resulted in a penalty stroke. Senior Emily Riley (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), who scored twice on the day, put the ensuing shot up high to the right of Hartwick keeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.) for a 1-0 lead.
Six minutes, 55 seconds later the visitors pushed their lead to two goals on a tally from Courtney Davis (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland). After a Hartwick giveaway just over midfield, Ashley Ferenczy had 40 yards of open space between her and the 'Wick goal. Inside the circle, she made Campbell commit and slipped a pass to Davis who finished into an open goal.
Emily Riley scored from the top of the circle with under 10 minutes remaining in the half and the Saints entered halftime with a three-goal margin.
SLU had the advantage in shots, 9-4, at the break and both teams managed five penalty corners. All four of the Hawks' shots in the first stanza never made it to goal. Three were blocked by Saint defenders and one of Kelsey Kimble's (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) shots went just wide of the St. Lawrence goal.
Hartwick outshot SLU 3-1 in the early stages of the second half. Kimble, who closed the day with five of 'Wick's nine shots, forced Saint goalie Nicole Matos (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) to make a save on a hard shot from the left side with 15 minutes elapsed.
St. Lawrence began to pressure the Hawks later in the half, registering five penalty corners in an eight-minute span. The Saints were rewarded with 5:06 left in the game as Ali Ferenczy (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville S.) found Ashley Ferenczy (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville S.) in front off a cross from the left side of goal to close out the day's scoring.
SLU held a 14-9 edge in shots in the contest. Both teams recorded 11 corners.
Campbell and Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) combined for five saves for Hartwick. Campbell stopped three shots in 48:40, while Staley made two saves in 21:10 of action.
Matos finished the game with one save. Reserve keeper Jeannette Hoets played the final five minutes without recording a save.
Hartwick plays on Tuesday, September 13 at RPI in a makeup game from this past Wednesday. The Hawks and Engineers battle at 7 p.m. in Troy, NY.
