Field Hockey Falls at RPI

            TROY, NY – Hartwick field hockey lost on the road Tuesday night at RPI in a makeup game from September 7. Four different Engineers scored goals as the hosts won by a 4-0 margin. The Hawks slip to 1-3 on the year, while RPI improves to 2-1.
            The Engineers got things rolling early as senior Erika Hawksley (Windsor, ME/Erskine Academy) scored at the 6:26 mark. She finished off a cross from the right side from teammate Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) for the tally.
            Later in the half, sophomore Kelsey Porter (Quechee, VT/Hartford) collected a pass near the left corner of the box before sending the ball intot he middle of the circle. RPI Junior Carlie Newcomb (Southwick, MA/Southwick Tolland Regional) found the ball and sent it past a sprawling Devon Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) for the 2-0 advantage.
            Hartwick had solid chances came within seconds of one another as freshman Lindsey Daley (Watertown, MA/Watertown) and classmate Abby Wentlent (Greene, NY/Greene) each fired close range shots at the RPI goal, but Engineer keeper Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) was there for the saves.
            Four minutes, fifty-six seconds into the second half, the Engineers added their third tally as Peterson backhanded a pass from freshman Liana Viaggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac).
            With 13:06 remaining, Kierstan Ryan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) closed out the scoring   with a shot past reserve goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional)
            The Hawks were outshot by a slight 6-5 margin the second half of play. Wentlent, who fired off four of the Hawks' seven shots, forced a save from Earle with five minutes remaining.
            The Engineers finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge on goal. RPI also took nine corners to the Hawks' four.
            Staley finished the game with three saves in 39:55 played. Campbell had one save in the final 30:05. Earle stopped three shots in the Engineer cage.
            Hartwick is back in action on Saturday as it heads to Washington & Jefferson for its first Empire 8 game. Rensselaer returns to action also on Saturday as it opens Liberty League play on the road at Skidmore.
