Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against W&J

WASHINGTON, PA – Hartwick's field hockey team scored twice in the opening eight minutes of the game, but host Washington & Jefferson College would score five of the game's final six goals in a 5-3 victory in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams. Freshman Abby Wentlent (Greene, NY/Greene) scored two goals for 'Wick with junior Kelsey Kimble's (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) scoring once. Sophomore Megan Lefeber (Riverton, CT/Northwestern) recorded two assists.
The Hawks jumped on the Presidents quickly as they were awarded a penalty stroke 6:09 into the contest. Kimble beat W&J goalie Harley Straub for her first goal of the season which gave Hartwick the one-goal lead.
The Hawks registered a pair of penalty corners following the goal and their pressure paid off as Lefeber delivered a pass to Wentlent, who buried her shot for her second tally of the young season.
The Presidents quickly dug their way out of the two-goal hole scoring twice in a 40-second span. Jennifer Marabella and Arielle King scored the W&J goals and the game was 2-2 at the 12:39 mark of the first half.
King would set up Marabella for the Presidents third goal with 12:41 to play in the half, but Hartwick answered right back as Wentlent tallied from Lefeber once again 67 ticks later.
Washington & Jefferson (4-0, 1-0 E8) took the lead for good 4:26 into the second half as Marabella scored her third of the day. Amanda Pflumm secured the assist.
Pflumm would close out the scoring later in the half. She deflected in a King pass with just 3:35 remaining for the final 5-3 score line.
The Presidents held a 17-9 edge in shots for the game. They also earned 10 penalty corners to the Hawks' seven.
Hawk freshman goalkeeper Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) made seven saves on the day. Straub stopped six 'Wick shots.
Hartwick (1-4, 0-1 E8) looks to snap a four-game skid on Tuesday, September 20 as the team hosts nationally 16th ranked Cortland at Wright Stadium at 4 p.m. W&J plays Kenyon Sunday at 1 p.m.
