ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Cortland scored twice in the opening 5:14 en route to a 5-0 win over Hartwick field hockey on Tuesday at Wright Stadium. Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse, NY/CNS) led the Red Dragons with three goals on the day.
Cortland needed just 2:16 to get on the scoreboard as Barbagallo tallied from Erin Smith (Greene, NY/Greene). Smith was roughly 20 yards from goal and played the ball into the circle to Barbagallo who finished past Hartwick goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.) for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes, fifty-eight seconds later, Cortland added to its lead. Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown, NY) scored the goal on a shot from roughly 10 yards out that found the net low to the far post past Campbell's left pad.
The Hawks would keep the Red Dragons out for the rest of the half. The visitors held a territorial advantage with 11 of the half's 13 shots. Cortland earned four penalty corners to Hartwick's two in the opening 35 minutes.
Barbagallo and Smith hooked up again 9:26 into the second half to make it s a three-goal game. From the left side of goal, Smith blasted the ball back across to the far post where Barbagallo was waiting to tap it in.
The Red Dragons would close out the scoring with two goals 30 seconds apart later in the half. Sara Woodward (Ancram, NY/Pine Plains) scored on a backhand goal at the 51:45 mark and Barbagallo scored from in close at 52:15.
In the closing stages of the match, the Hawks had the better of play, out-shooting the Red Dragons by a 6-3 margin over the final 15 minutes. Reserve goalie Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge), however, made three saves for the Red Dragons in the span to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Hartwick had a flurry of chances with four and a half minutes left to play following a penalty corner. Sophomore Megan Lefeber (Riverton, CT/Northwestern) had a shot blocked by a Cortland back, but the ball fell right to defender Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) who had two chances right in front. Her first shot was kicked away by Perricone and her rebound was put wide of the cage.
Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, NY/Delaware Valley) and Abby Wentlent (Greene, NY/Greene) each fired off shots in the final 3:14. Kimble's effort was saved and Wentlent's drive was blocked by the Red Dragon defense.
Campbell and Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) combined for eight saves in the game. Campbell stopped five in 52 minutes. Staley made three saves in the final 17. Defender Cassie Jonaitis (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) registered a defensive save in the opening half.
