Hartwick Field Hockey Drops 3-0 Decision to Visiting Geneseo

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick came up short in its quest to win two games in two days on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Geneseo. The Hawks, who defeated Ithaca yesterday by a count of 2-1, slip to 2-6 overall on the year. The Knights improve to 6-3.
Kayla DeAngelis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had one goal and one assist to pace the visitors. She also took seven of the Knights' 16 shots in the match. Junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) and freshman Abby Wentlent (Greene, NY/Greene) each had two shots for the Hawks.
Kimble had the fist solid scoring chance of the day just two minutes into the game. She had the ball in close but Geneseo goalie Caitlyn Dowell (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) had come out on the play to cut down the angle and made the save.
The Hawks held a 5-2 edge in shots through the opening 22 minutes, but Dowell made three stops to keep the game even. The Knights didn't record their first scoring chance until the 22:19 mark. DeAngelis broke in alone with Hawk goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.), but her shot was stifled by the diving 'Wick keeper.
The Knight broke the ice with just over 13 minutes left in the first half. Katie Gallo (Sayville, NY/Sayville) played a ball into the circle to the left side of the Hartwick goal to Rachel Atkins (Clarence, NY/Clarence). Her low shot made its way through traffic and past Campbell to the near post to give Geneseo the lead.
DeAngelis nearly made it 2-0 twice before halftime. She broke in one-versus-one with Campbell but she put her far-post shot just wide with 3:30 left. With less than a minute remaining, Campbell made a sprawling save to deny DeAngelis and the game was a one-goal affair at the break.
In the second half, the Hawks out-shot the Knights 3-1 in the first 12:45, which included a shot from Wentlent that forced a defensive save from Geneseo's Atkins. The Knights would counter, scoring at the 46:44 mark to gain a two-goal cushion. DeAngelis got in behind the Hawks' defense and she slipped the ball underneath Campbell for the 2-0 lead.
Four minutes, 27 seconds later, the Knights closed out the day's scoring. After Kelsey Horan (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) got the ball to DeAngelis in the circle, DeAngelis returned the favor, playing it back to Horan who finished in front for the third goal.
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the final 18 minutes, and the game ended in favor of the Knights.
Campbell made five saves in the first 51 minutes in goal for the Hawks. Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) played the final 19 minutes but did not need to make a save. Dowell recorded four saves to earn the shutout.
Hartwick hits the road on Wednesday for its next non-conference game. The Hawks travel to Morrisville State for a 4 p.m. contest.
