Field Hockey Battles Back to Sink Morrisville

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick field hockey overcame deficits on three separate occasions to emerge with a 4-3 road victory at Morrisville State on Wednesday. Freshman Abby Wentlent's (Greene, NY/Greene) second goal of the game with 14:32 left on the clock gave the Hawks their first lead of the day and closed out the scoring. Hartwick, which improves to 3-6 on the year, has now won two of its last three games. Morrisville (0-7) is still in search of its first victory.
Hartwick's Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) garnered a career-high four points in the game on one goal and three assists. Sophomore Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) also tallied for 'Wick. The goals for both Carlson and Reynolds were the first of their careers at Hartwick.
Morrisville opened the scoring against the run of play. The Hawks held a 7-1 edge in shots over the opening 11 minutes, but Jamie Anderson gave the hosts the 1-0 edge off a corner. Stephanie Stahl earned an assist on the play.
Hartwick continued to pressure the Mustangs' goal and finally was rewarded at the 19:53 mark of the game as Carlson's centering pass was tipped in by Reynolds to even the match at 1-1.
Just 3:13 later, Anderson gave Morrisville the advantage again. She dribbled down the center of the Hartwick circle and found the net past Hartwick goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.) for a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks held a 3-2 advantage in shots the rest of the half but the score remained 2-1 in favor of Morrisville at the break.
Wentlent wasted little time in the second half tying the score at 2-2 as she tallied for the first time of the day after 3:22. Carlson sent a corner into Wentlent whose drive from the right side got past Mustang goalie Laura Blumenfield.
Two minutes, forty seconds later, the hosts jumped in front again as Joanna Tritto tallied. Brandi Rafalko picked up the assist and the Mustangs led 3-2.
'Wick only trailed for the next 3:58 as Carlson scored from the top of the circle to tie the score at 3-3 with exactly 25 minutes remaining on the clock.
Hartwick dominated the next 10 minutes with four shots and two corners while holding the Mustangs shot-less. Wentlent put Hartwick up to stay at the 55:28 mark of the game with a shot from the top of the arc.
The Mustangs pressed for the tying goal over the final 14 and a half minutes but the Hawks wouldn't be denied. Morrisville fired eight shots at the Hartwick cage, but Campbell came up with four saves on all four shots that made it to her to preserve the 'Wick victory.
The Hawks finished the game with a 22-20 advantage in shots. The Mustangs registered 10 corners to the Hawks' nine.
Campbell made eight saves for Hartwick. Blumenfield made seven saves in a losing effort.
With the win, the Hawks stay perfect against the Mustangs with a 5-0 record against them since 1978. 'Wick hosts Elmira in a key Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday at 11 a.m at Wright Stadium.
