Swimming and Diving Teams Dominate Alfred

ONEONTA, NY- The men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Empire 8 rival Alfred on Saturday afternoon at Moyer Pool and put on a dominating display as both teams came up with victories. The men won by the score of 188-93 and the women by the final of 173-89.

The men stay perfect with a record 13-0 and the women are now 11-2. The men's victory sets a new program record for dual meet victories in a season, breaking the previous record of 12 set in 1991-92. The women have now won 11 dual meets for just the fourth time in program history.

Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) won three races on the day to lead the men. He was the winner of the 200 IM (2:01.88), the 100 breast (59.15), and the 200 breast (2:10.60). Both the 100 and 200 breast times set new pool records. Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX) picked up two wins in the 100 back (55.29) and the 200 back (2:03.66). His 200 back time equaled teammate Eric Moore (Sioux Falls, SD), who tied for his first collegiate win.

Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA) earned wins in the 1000 free (10:01.28) and the 500 free (4:53.75). Miles Blaney (New York, NY) won the 200 free (1:45.37) and the 100 fly (53.76).

Other winners include Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) in the 200 fly (2:00.41), Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ) in the 50 free (22.25), and John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA) in the 100 free (49.50).

The 200 medley relay team of Cupit, Kleso, Willcox, and Phillips was first with a time of 1:38.31. The 200 free relay quartet of Kleso, Cupit, Ranson, and Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA) was a winner in a time of 1:29.75.

Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) won both the one and three-meter dives with scores of 256.20 and 268.60, respectively.

The women won despite having only 17 out of 26 swimmers available to compete. Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA) and Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) both won three races each for the women. Mathias was victorious in the 100 back (1:04.53), 200 back (2:17.94), and the 1000 free (11:15.42). Ha won the 100 fly (1:00.29), 200 IM (2:17.73), and the 200 fly (2:21.32).

Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA) and Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover, Park, IL) both won two events. Nelson won the 100 breast (1:12.30) and the 200 breast (2:34.29). Campbell was a winner in the 200 free (2:01.86) and the 500 free (5:29.42).

Justine Woodend (Visalia, CA) won the only other event for the women. She was the winner of the 50 free in a time of 25.28. She was narrowly defeated in the 100 free as Alfred's Chrissy Behr won by just .03 seconds (56.20).

The 200 medley relay team of Maddy Quick (Jaffrey, NH), Nelson, Ha, and Woodend won in a time of 1:55.16. The 200 free relay squad of Woodend, Quick, Campbell, and Sarah Uminski (Falmouth, ME) had a winning time of 1:45.60.

Lindsey Bowker (Bothell, WA) won the one-meter dive with a score of 216.20.

Both Hartwick swimming and diving teams return to action next weekend when they head on the road to face Skidmore on Sunday, January 22 at 12 p.m.
