Box Score

ONEONTA, NY - Nationally second ranked Akron used four different goal scorers to secure a 4-0 shutout victory over Hartwick's men's soccer team on Saturday at Elmore Field. The visiting Zips put the Hawks under pressure all day and had much of the advantage in ball possession for 90 minutes.

Akron opened the day's scoring on the first shot of the day 1:45 into the contest. Robbie Derschang played a ball from the left corner back to the top of the 18-yard box and Eric Stevenson collected it and hammered a far-post shot past 'Wick keeper Tom Buckner (Oxfordshire, England, England/Henley College) for his sixth tally of the season.

The Zips tacked on their second in the 31st minute following a cross. Dillon Serna set up the goal after his service from the right sideline found Chad Barson on the far post. Barson's header beat Buckner and Akron had a two-goal cushion.

The visitors held a large territorial edge on the Hawks after 45 minutes. The Zips held a 10-0 edge in shots and 4-0 advantage in corners.

Five minutes, seven seconds into the second half, the Zips' lead was extended to three. Serna played the ball across from the right to the far post to Akron leading scorer Reinaldo Brenes. He one-timed a shot from a difficult angle to the near post that eluded reserve goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino). It marked Brenes' 10th goal of the season.

The game remained 3-0 until the 76:44 mark. Phil Fives knocked a short ball into the Hartwick box from the left side and it was collected by Derschang. He attempted to get a shot off but it was blocked by a Hartwick back and continued over to Alfred Koroma who was left unmarked. Koroma scored easily leaving Munarriz no chance for the final goal of the day.

Hartwick's best opportunity came in the closing minutes of the match. A chipped ball was run onto by freshman Dean Fowler (Sydney, Australia/Colo HS) who found himself alone with Akron keeper David Meves. Fowler, however, could not get the ball from under his feet and get a shot off in time before the ball was cleared out by the Zips.

Akron ended the match with 18 shots to Hartwick's three. The Zips took all seven corners in the game.

Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Berkshire School) had two of the Hawks' three shots in the game. Buckner and Munarriz each made four saves in 45 minutes between the pipes for the Hawks.

Hartwick will stay at home for its next MAC game on Tuesday, October 30. The Hawks host Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Elmore Field.
