HOUGHTON, NY- The Hartwick field hockey team fell behind 2-1 midway through the first half but recovered and scored five straight times as the Hawks won 6-2 over Houghton on Saturday afternoon in the first meeting between the two schools. The win gives Hartwick a 6-5 overall record and 4-1 record in the Empire 8. The Highlanders fall to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8.
The Highlanders scored first a little over three minutes into the game. Following a penalty corner by Tatum McLeod, Ashley Engle found McLeod for the score to put Houghton up 1-0.
Hartwick would knot the score up at one each in the 11th minute on
Katie Lonsky's (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Blair Academy) 10th goal of the season. Engle's goal in the 17th minute would give the Highlanders back the lead. The Hawks would come back to tie the game on
Hiliary Carlson's (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) first goal of the day and then took the lead on her second score as the Hawks went up 3-2 at the half.
In the second half, Hartwick held on to its one-goal lead for most of the period. Carlson scored her third goal of the contest with just over eight minutes remaining to play to increase the lead to two scores. Hartwick would then get a goal when the ball bounced off a Houghton defender and in.
Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) completed the scoring in the game with her third goal of the season in the 65
th minute.
Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) started for the Hawks in goal and had just one save. Hillery Duman started for the Highlanders and had three saves in 61:06 of game time. She was replaced by Emily Thompson who played the remaining 8:54 and did not record a save.
Hartwick led Houghton in shots 9-3 with all of the Highlanders' shots coming in the first half. 'Wick dominated in penalty corners, 13-4.
The Hawks return home for a non-conference match with Union on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
