ONEONTA, NY- The visiting Union field hockey team scored twice in the second half as it defeated Hartwick 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss evens the Hawks' record at 6-6 while Union improves to 5-7.
It was a tough defensive battle throughout the game as both teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first half. Hartwick led in shots by a 3-1 margin.
The second half was much of the same as neither team could gain any offensive ground. The Dutchwomen finally struck first in the 46th minute. Following a shot by Caroline Moran that was saved by Hartwick goalkeeper
Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional), Molly Cohen took the rebound and passed to Allison Troy who snuck the ball past Campbell and into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Union would add a second goal with 37 seconds left on the clock. Nicole Merigliano went downfield eluding a diving Campbell and shot past defender
Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) to give the Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks had two chances to get on the board with time expiring.
Cassie Jonaitis (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) had two penalty corners with no time on the clock but both were thwarted by the Union defense as the Dutchwomen came away with the victory.
Campbell made one save in goal for the Hawks. Molly McCune had four saves for Union.
Hartwick faces a big test on Saturday as the Hawks travel to Hoboken, NJ to take on Empire 8 conference leader Stevens. Game time will be at 10:30 a.m.
