Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) scored 25 points to lead all scorers as the Hartwick men's basketball team trailed only by one point at halftime but the visiting Union Dutchmen pulled away late in the second period to defeat the Hawks 62-54 on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena. Union starts its season 1-0 while 'Wick falls to 1-2.
Suderley shot 10-for-18 from the field while converting all five of his free throws and also pulled down nine rebounds.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) contributed nine points, nine rebounds, and three steals.
Union was led by Joe Mason who scored 16 points and added seven rebounds. Keith Callies had 12 points and seven rebounds while Keven Donohue had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Dutchmen started the game on a 10-4 run but back-to-back three pointers from
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and
Glenn Gavan (Newton, NY/Pope John XXIII) tied the contest up at 10-10 at 11:52. After an exchange of baskets, Hartwick would take its first lead of the game on a layup by
Peter Melanson (Little Compton, RI/Bishop Staing) to go ahead 16-14 with 8:21 on the clock. 'Wick would still lead 23-21 with 4:15 remaining in the half until Donuhue sank a three-point shot with 3:43 on the clock to put Union ahead 24-23.
The game would remain 24-23 for the next three minutes as both teams missed shots and exchanged turnovers. Evan Croll finally hit a trey to move Union ahead 27-23 with 48 ticks on the game clock. The Hawks would answer with a three of their own from
Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) with 19 seconds left to make it a 27-26 Union lead at halftime.
Keith Callies' opening layup of the second half put the Dutchmen up 29-26. A jumper and layup by Sudeley would give Hartwick the lead back, 30-29, at 16:16.
Bradley's layup at 13:37 gave Hartwick its final lead of the game at 35-34. Union then went off on a 9-0 run to go up 42-34. The Hawks cut the lead in half to 42-39 with 9:46 on the clock but a 12-5 Dutchmen run gave them a 10 point advantage with 3:41 remaining.
Hartwick did not go away quietly as it would reduce that lead to 54-50 with a little over two minutes left in the game. It was close as 'Wick would get, however, as Union converted 8 of 10 free throws in the final 1:11 of play to seal the win.
For the game, Union was 23-of-50 from the floor (46%) to Hartwick's 22-of-64 (34.4%). The Hawks did not shoot well from behind the three-point line as they made 5-of-29 (17.2%) of their shots to Union's 6-of-18 (33.3%).
The Hawks will return to their home floor on Sunday afternoon when they host Wells College. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m.
