ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (3-1) started the game on a 12-0 and never looked back in a 71-37 romp of visiting Drew University on Sunday at Lambros Arena. With the victory, the Hawks avenge a 59-52 loss in Madison, NJ last season to start the 2011-12 season. The Rangers fall to 1-3 with the loss.
Juniors
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy),
Tracey Koch (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem), and
Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) were in double figures for the Hawks and a total of 10 players made it into the scoring column. Purcell registered a game-high 17 points and a team-best eight rebounds for 'Wick. Koch added a career-high 13 points and six boards and Foglia contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
The 34-point margin of victory for Hartwick is its largest since 2006 when the Hawks defeated Sage, 80-42. 'Wick improves to 3-1 against the Rangers all-time.
It only took the Hawks 31 seconds to break the 0-0 tie and take the lead for good after a Purcell jumper with 19:29 to go in the first half. Over the opening eight and a half minutes, 'Wick forced the Rangers into seven turnovers and nine missed shots as it opened up a 12-0 lead.
Drew finally got on the board when Whitney Mackay converted a pair of free throws. It would take the visitors another 2:05 to get their first field goal of the night on a basket by Jennifer Mateo with 9:22 left in the half.
The Rangers got as close as nine points in the opening frame, 16-7, but the Hawks closed on an 18-10 run for a 34-17 lead at intermission. Foglia led 'Wick with 11 points in the period and the hosts limited Drew to just 21% shooting (6-for-28) and forced 13 turnovers.
Early in the second half, a 16-6 run would extend the Hawks' advantage to 27 points. Koch scored seven points to lead the way for Hartwick in the run.
The Hawks never led by less than 22 points the rest of the way. They never led by less than 30 over the final nine minutes of the game.
Purcell closed out the contest with three treys and she tied for a team-high with four steals. Koch made 5-of-9 shots from the floor and added two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
Freshmen
Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow HS) and
Sammy Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) combined for 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Dumas scored eight and grabbed five boards. Villarini added seven points and four rebounds.
Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) contributed six points and
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) netted five for the Blue and White.
Hartwick out-rebounded Drew by a margin of 51-42. The Hawks converted 21 Ranger turnovers into 21 points and held them to 22% shooting.
Drew was led by Mackay's 11 points. She hit a trio of three-pointers in the game. Courtney Stephens notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
Hartwick returns to action on Wednesday against cross-city rival Oneonta State. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at Dewar Arena.
