’Wick Field Hockey Falls to Vassar in Season Opener

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- Anna Schroder scored two goals for the host Brewers as Vassar defeated visiting Hartwick 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The game was the first game of the season for both teams.

Vassar scored first with 6:07 remaining in the first period on Schroeder's first goal. After stealing the ball from a Hartwick defender, her shot from 14 yards out got past 'Wick's Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) to give the Brewers the 1-0 lead. Despite trailing by a goal at halftime, the Hawks led in shots 9-4.

Just 3:15 into the second half, Schroeder would put Vassar up 2-0 with a ride side blast from the top of the circle. Later in the half, Haley Merrit's shot was blocked but Bianca Zarella took the rebound and deposited the ball in the back of the goal for a 3-0 Vassar lead.

The Hawks would finally get on the scoreboard less than two minutes later. After Cassie Jonaitis (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) took a penalty corner, she would regain the ball to score past the left side of goaltender Maggie Brelis to make it a 3-1 contest.

Hartwick would have several chances to score in the remainder of the game but had four shots blocked including two in the final 2:38 of play.

'Wick ended the game with a 17-14 advantage in shots over Vassar. Hartwick also led 9-8 in penalty corners.

Campbell stopped four shots in goal for Hartwick. Brelis deflected five shots for the Brewers.

The Hawks will next host RPI in their home opener this coming Wednesday, September 5 at Wright Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
