Box Score ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's soccer team opened the 2012 season in grand fashion as it had no problem in defeating SUNY Old Westbury 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Elmore Field. The game was part of the 9
th annual Erinn K. Brozman Cup.
Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover-Sherborn) scored two goals and had one assist for the Hawks.
Morgan Downin (Longview, TX/Longview) and
Stephanie Morini (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) also had scores in their first collegiate game.
Thorndike set up the first 'Wick goal of the day as she sailed a long pass from the right side of the field that Downin headed into the net to put Hartwick on top 1-0 in the 27
th minute. Both teams fought for possession the rest of the half as the Hawks held their lead going into halftime.
Hartwick poured on the offense in the second half. In the 55
th minute of the game,
Jayme Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus Central) raced down the left side of the field and hit Thorndike on a cross where she deposited the ball in the goal for a 2-0 Hartwick lead.
Hartwick had a free kick in the 70
th minute of play.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) passed to Morini who hit a long shot that sailed past Panther goaltender Heather Grosso and into the goal for a 3-0 'Wick lead. Just 54 seconds later,
Kristen McKasty (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) blasted a shot that Gross stopped but Thorndike was right there to bank in the rebound and put the Hawks on top 4-0.
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) picked up her first career shutout as she stopped four shots in goal for the Hawks. Caitlin Thomas started in goal for Old Westbury and made two saves. Grosso replaced her in the second half and also had two saves.
The teams were even in shots in the first half 4-4. Hartwick outshot the Panthers 7-2 in the second half as the Hawks were aggressive in the Old Westbury zone.
Hartwick will face SUNY Cobleskill tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. The Fighting Tigers played Utica in the earlier game of the day and fell to the Pioneers 4-0.
