Field Hockey Gets Huge Win over Washington & Jefferson

Megan Sweeney scored three goals to lead the Hawks
Box Score ONEONTA, NY- Megan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) scored two goals as the Hartwick field hockey team defeated Washington and Jefferson 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium.  Hartwick improves its record to 3-2 and 1-0 in the Empire 8 and the Presidents even their  overall record at 2-2 and their Empire 8 record at 1-1.

The win was only the second over the Presidents since Washington and Jefferson joined the Empire 8 in 2006. The last Hawk victory was in 2009, a 3-1 victory in Washington, PA.

The Hawks came out firing in the opening minutes of the game as just over six minutes in, Katie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Blair Academy) scored to put Hartwick ahead 1-0. A little over eight minutes later, Lonsky found Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) for the goal and the Hawks lead was 2-0.

The 'Wick offense would not let up as just under three minutes after the team's second goal, Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Sweeney assisted on the play and Hartwick had a 3-0 lead.

Following a W&J timeout, the Presidents regrouped and got on the board with a goal by Arielle King.  The Presidents would get three shots in the final 56 seconds of the first half but Hartwick goalkeeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) would stop the first two shots and Victoria Patrick's shot with 29 seconds left went wide as the Hawks went into halftime up 3-1.

In the second half, both teams would trade a shot each in the first 16:51 of play. In the 56th minute, Sweeney struck again as she put back a rebound for the score and a 4-1 'Wick lead. The Presidents would answer back in the 63rd minute when Erin Barno played the ball in front of the circle and shot past Campbell for the goal.

The Hawks would score their final goal of the game with about six minutes left on the clock. Kimble found Sweeney in front and her shot got past President goalie Kira Bunker.

Campbell had three saves for the Hawks. Morgan Brozena started for the Presidents and did not record a save in 17:32 of playing time. Bunker replaced her and had just one save.

The teams were close in shots as W&J held an 11-10 advantage. The Presidents also led in 9-8 in corners.

The Hawks head on the road to face #20 ranked Rochester on Tuesday. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
