Field Hockey Falls to RPI in Home Opener

Box Score ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick field hockey team hosted RPI in a non-conference match at Wright Stadium on Wednesday afternoon and the visiting Engineers came away with a 5-1 victory. RPI evens its record at 1-1 while the Hawks fall to 0-2.

Carlie Newcomb scored first for the Engineers just under 16 minutes into the game. Hartwick goalkeeper Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) had stopped a previous Engineer shot but the rebound came back to Newcomb who poked it into the goal to give RPI the 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, RPI's Holly Dupuis played a penalty corner shot to Chloe Hutchinson who received the ball and hit a rocket that got past Campbell to give RPI the 2-0 advantage. The score would stay that way until halftime.

The Engineers would tack on three more goals in the second half. Hartwick would finally get on the board with just under three minutes to play in the game. Cassie Jonaitis' (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) penalty corner was settled by Katie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Blair Academy) whose shot got past Engineer goaltender Hannah Clough to give the Hawks their only goal of the contest.

Campbell stopped eight shots for Hartwick. Clough had three saves for RPI.

The Engineers led in shots 19-6 and had a 12-1 advantage in the second half. RPI led Hartwick in penalty corners 12-6.

Hartwick will go on the road to face St. Lawrence this Saturday. Game time will be at 12 p.m.
