Men’s Hoops Falls to St. John Fisher

ONEONTA, NY - The men's basketball team led by as much as 20-8 midway through the first half but visiting St. John Fisher came back to take the lead at halftime and outscore the Hawks 47-27 in the second stanza on its way to an 82-54 victory on Friday night at Lambros Arena. The Hawks fall to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in the Empire 8 while the Cardinals improve to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8.

Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) was the only Hartwick starter to score in double digits as he had 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting. He added eight rebounds and two assists. Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) scored nine points and had four rebounds.

Coming off the bench, Rob Heller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) had a season-high eight points. Aaron Laing (Laurens, NY/Laurens) chipped in seven points and four rebounds.

Justin Plata was one of four Cardinal players to score in double digits as he had 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Tyler Hart contributed 14 points while shooting 6-of-7 and also had three rebounds and three assists. Jason Norsen added 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal. Adam Ambielli chipped in 10 points and three rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 55.4% (31-of-56) from the floor on the night and 40% (10-of-25) from beyond the three-point arc. The Hawks shot 36.5% (19-of-52) in field goals and made just 29.4% (5-of-17) of their three-point shots.

Hartwick got off to an 8-5 lead in the first few minutes of the first half. After a three-pointer from Plata narrowed the deficit to 10-8 at 15:49, 'Wick embarked on a 10-0 run to go up 20-8 at the 10:49 mark. The Cardinals then went on a 27-7 run the rest of the half to retake the lead.

The score was tied twice and a second free throw from Norsen gave St. John Fisher the one-point lead, 27-26, at 2:40. Back-to-back three-point shots from Ambielli to close out the half staked the Cardinals a 35-27 advantage.

Fisher picked up where it left off in the beginning of the second half as Optimystik Kinard hit his only three-pointer of the game to put the Cardinals ahead 38-27. A Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) layup got the Hawks to within nine, but the Cardinals would score eight quick points to surge ahead 46-29 at 16:20.

Hartwick would get to within 15 points, 52-37, with 13:16 showing on the clock but a huge 30-10 Fisher run covering 10 minutes of game time put the game out of reach. The Cardinals came out hot in the second half as they shot 62% from the floor to Hartwick's 34.8%.

The Cardinals led in rebounds 31-30. They also had a presence in the paint outscoring the Hawks 32-22.

The Hawks return to their home floor tomorrow afternoon when they host Alfred. Game time will be at 4 pm.
