’Wick Field Hockey Defeats Union 4-2

Hiliary Carlson scored twice to lead the Hawks over Union.

SCHENECTADY, NY- Despite giving up an early goal, the Hartwick field hockey team scored four straight times while goalie Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) stopped 15 shots as the Hawks defeated Union 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The win, which is Hartwick's second straight, gives the Hawks a record of 4-8 while the Dutchwomen fall to 3-8 on the season.

Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) led with two goals. Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) scored once and added three helpers. Kelly Kramer (Royersford, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored her fourth goal of the season and also added an assist.

Union opened the scoring just 53 seconds into the contest with Maggie Ferrari's second goal of the season. She was fed in front from Nicole Merigliano close to the right of the goal. The Hawks tied it up at 3:36 when Ott sent a pass from the far right side to Carlson, who tucked it in inside the left post for the goal.

Ott gave the Hawks the lead at 7:17. Off a corner, Kramer took the pass and found Ott five yards out for the score. The Hawks made it 3-1 on Carlson's second of the day at 18:48. Ott sent a pass through traffic to the left side and Carlson banged home the score to give Hartwick a 3-1 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Ott sent a lead pass to Kramer, who shot it in from the middle from eight yards out to increase the 'Wick lead to 4-1 at 49:22. Union got back to within two on Merigliano's seventh of the season at 54:31.

The Hartwick defense clamped down in the final 15:30 of the game. The Dutchwomen had a couple of chances to score in the final minutes but Carter turned away both shots to preserve Hartwick's lead and the victory.

Hartwick won despite being outshot 24-14 by Union. The Hawks did lead in penalty corners, 10-8.

'Wick returns to Wright Stadium this Saturday to host a key Empire 8 game against Utica. Game time will be at 11 a.m.
