Swimming and Diving Teams Compete at Hamilton Quad Meet

Jeremy Torres and Gwen Mathias both had two wins on the day for the Hawks.
CLINTON, NY- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams participated in a quad meet with host Hamilton, Ithaca, and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. The men picked up two wins on the day as they defeated the Continentals 190-98 and the Knights 186-108 but were narrowly defeated by the Bombers 145-143. The women defeated Hamilton 183-105 and fell to the Bombers 192-102 and the Knights 173-125.

Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.) and Jeremy Torres (Poulsbo, WA) both had a pair of victories to lead the men's team. Grunewald claimed wins in the 1000 free (9:55.81) and the 500 free (4:48.66). Torres had first place finishes in the 200 breast (2:10.64) and the 100 breast (59.98).

Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) touched the wall first in the 200 free in 1:45.58. He also added second place finishes in the 50 free (21.62) and the 100 free (48.26). Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Rocky River) won the 200 fly (1:56.78) and came in second in the 100 fly event (54.00).

Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL) claimed victory in the 200 IM with a winning time of 2:00.79. The 400 free relay team of Santiesteban, Evan DeGidio (Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal School), Grunewald, and Ranson swam a time of 3:16.38 that put them in second place.

The women were led by Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy) who swam to victories in two events. Mathias had first place finishes in the 1000 (10.55.94) and the 500 free (5:18.82).

Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) had the other win for the women's team in the 200 breast with a winning time of 2:28.88. Nelson also had a second place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.99.

The women had a few other strong finishes. Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A. Coleman) was the runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.26. Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North) came in third in the 200 free (2:01.44). In the three-meter diving event, Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor) was second with a score of 234.40.

Both relay teams had two third place finishes. The 200 medley relay squad of Allison Agate (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), Nelson, Lindsay Bierwert (Leeds, MA/Northampton), and Kelsey Elliot (Cortland, NY/Homer) posted a time of 1:55.08. The 400 free relay squad of Campbell, Elliot, Mathias, and Rutigliano had a time of 3:47.77.

The men's record now stands at 9-1 while the women are 7-3. Both teams return to action on December 6 when they travel to Ithaca for the Ithaca College Invitational.
